What is the Pediatrician's Role in Postpartum Depression? Screening and Management of Maternal Mental Health in Pediatric Primary Care Settings

Presented by Project TEACH’s faculty that includes a pediatrician, child/adolescent psychiatrist and reproductive psychiatrists, this program will provide pediatric clinicians with an improved understanding of how to best support the mental health needs of perinatal patients as they present in your practice.

Project TEACH is funded by the New York State Office of Mental Health and all services and events, such as this intensive training, are offered at no-cost to clinicians in New York State.

Target Audience

New York State primary care and family practice physicians, obstetricians/gynecologists, pediatricians and psychiatrists; as well as, psychologists, nursing professionals, social workers, residents, and mental health clinicians working with primary care, pediatric or ob/gyn practices.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this course, participants should be able to:

  1. Discuss the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) policy statement on the pediatrician’s role in recognition and management of perinatal depression.
  2. Assess and manage low-risk vs. high-risk status in response to an elevated score on a depression screening scale.
  3. Identify maternal mental health resources, such as Project TEACH, that assist pediatricians with assessment, consultation and/or linkage and referral support.
